Spains most popular grape. Derived from the word’temprano” which means early. In Spain, Tempranillo ripens 2 to 3 weeks earlier than it counterparts of Grenache and Syrah. It is the main player in Spains famous Rioja wines. Wilderotter Tempranillo is aged in mostly neutral barrels to let the grape emit its true berry flavors and spices. The oak provides an environment that “calms” the wine and imparts a smooth smoky finished product. The main characteristics of Tempranillo are all earthy in nature…. Leather, Wet dirt, smokiness, cigar, surrounded by lighter fruits of raspberry and strawberry. The final product is a slightly fruity, earthy wine with low acid and a slightly higher ph. It is a wine to be served with uncomplicated prepared foods such as steak on the grill where the wine can provide the spice.
