The fog is filtering the morning sun as I walk through the gigantic redwood grooves along the Northern California coast line. The morning dew makes the sole of my shoes squeak as I step on the burnt red needles and moss covered stones. Traversing up a ridge and to a clearing I spot a rock outcropping that surely looks to the ocean. I hear the waves crashing and pause to take in a breath of the cool sea scented air. It’s been three hours and I’m ready for a break. Perched upon the rock out-cropping and gazing into the horizon I reach for my lunch. The berries are all smashed together; raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate, but the aroma is divine. I reach in again and my hand emerges triumphantly with peppered honey ham slices. Ravenous from my morning hike I find my entire picnic filling my mouth simultaneously. I pause realizing my lack of manners long enough to realize that what I’m doing isn’t about manners it’s just about filling a basic human need… nourishment. In a civilized manner you should experience the same sensations of a sea swept breath of fruity beginnings, pepper and smoke building and the sweet vanilla finish with berries on the close from a bottle of 2007 Wilderotter Barbera.
